How to Get a Marriage License in Michigan

How to Get a Marriage License in Michigan

Getting married in Michigan starts with obtaining a valid marriage license from the County Clerk's office.

Whether you're planning a traditional wedding, an intimate elopement, or simply want to make your marriage legal, you'll need your marriage license before your wedding ceremony takes place.

Michigan Wedding Studio makes the ceremony part easy. Here's what you need to know about getting your license.

Where Do I Apply for a Michigan Marriage License?

If either person is a Michigan resident, the marriage license should be obtained from the county clerk in the county where that person resides.

If neither person is a Michigan resident, you generally apply in the Michigan county where the marriage ceremony will take place.

Because county procedures can vary, always check with the appropriate County Clerk before applying.

How Long Is a Michigan Marriage License Valid?

Michigan marriage licenses are generally valid for 33 days from the date of application and must be submitted up to 10 days after the license is signed.

That means you don't want to apply too early!

Your wedding ceremony must take place while the marriage license is still valid.

Is There a Waiting Period?

Yes. Michigan generally has a three-day waiting period after applying for a marriage license before the license can be issued.

County clerks may waive the waiting period. Requirements and additional fees can vary, so contact the county issuing your license if you need to get married quickly.

For example, Oakland County currently charges $5 to waive its three-day waiting period.

How Much Does a Michigan Marriage License Cost?

Fees can depend on residency and the county issuing the license.

For example, Oakland County currently lists its marriage-license fee as:

Michigan residents — $20 per couple
Out-of-state residents — $30 per couple

Check with your County Clerk for current fees and payment requirements.

What Do I Need to Apply?

The exact documents and application process can vary by county.

For example, Oakland County currently instructs applicants picking up their license to provide a confirmation number, valid identification, Social Security numbers, and birth certificates or passports for both parties.

Only one party needs to be present for pickup, but additional documentation is required for the absent party.

Always check your issuing county's requirements before visiting the clerk's office.

What Do I Bring to My Wedding Ceremony?

This part should be easy.

When you arrive at Michigan Wedding Studio, please bring:

Your Original Marriage License

  • Bring the original, valid marriage license issued by the County Clerk.
  • A marriage ceremony cannot be performed using an expired license. Michigan law also prohibits performing a marriage ceremony when the couple does not have a valid marriage license.

Valid Photo Identification

  • Both parties should bring valid government-issued photo identification.

Two Adult Witnesses

  • Michigan requires two witnesses who are at least 18 years old to be present for the marriage ceremony and sign the marriage license.
  • Michigan Wedding Studio may be able to provide witnesses when arranged in advance.

What Happens to the Marriage License After the Wedding?

During your ceremony, the required portions of your marriage license are completed and signed by the appropriate parties.

Michigan Wedding Studio will guide you through the marriage-license signing process as part of your wedding appointment.

Remember: obtaining the marriage license and getting married are two different steps.

  1. The County Clerk issues the license.
  2. Your wedding ceremony is what solemnizes the marriage.

It is the officiant's duty to return the completed license to the county clerk's office.
